Tokudo, receiving Precepts


The phrase “Tokudo” literally means “receiving the precepts”. Tokudo enriches and nourishes both the recipient and our Sangha. Undertaking Tokudo is a great gift to the community and a cause for great celebration.

The seven principles of Sotō Zen training:

  1.  Zazen,  
  2. Mindfulness, 
  3. Deepening understanding through personal effort,  
  4. Self-reflection,  
  5. Working with a teacher,  
  6. Studying Buddhist literature, and  
  7. Sustained effort.
